Millstreet Community School Students Engage in Climate & Sustainability Discussion with Public Representatives

Students from the 5th Year Climate Action & Sustainability and Agricultural Science classes at Millstreet Community School recently took part in an engaging and thought-provoking discussion with Billy Kelleher and Michael Healy-Rae.

The event focused on a range of important topics including local, national and European policy, greenhouse gas emissions, and sustainable farming and forestry initiatives. As part of their classroom learning, students prepared a series of questions which formed the basis of the discussion and allowed them to explore real-world environmental and agricultural challenges currently facing Ireland and Europe.

The session provided students with a valuable opportunity to hear directly from elected representatives about current policy decisions and future sustainability goals. Students engaged confidently throughout the discussion, raising important issues surrounding climate action, farming practices, forestry management, and balancing environmental targets with rural life and agriculture.

Teachers praised the students for the high standard of preparation and participation shown during the event. The discussion highlighted the importance of encouraging student voice and creating opportunities for young people to engage with current affairs and public policy.

Millstreet Community School would like to sincerely thank Billy Kelleher and Michael Healy Rae for their enthusiasm, encouragement, and positivity towards the students during the visit. Their willingness to engage openly with students helped create a highly educational and enjoyable experience for all involved.

The event forms part of the school’s continued commitment to sustainability education, active citizenship, and connecting classroom learning with real-world issues and experiences.
