Fond Farewell to Marion Buckley – 46 Years of Exceptional Service to Millstreet Community School

Millstreet Community School recently marked a truly historic and emotional occasion as we celebrated the retirement of Marion Buckley, following an extraordinary 46 years of dedicated service as our school secretary. Marion holds the distinction of being the longest-serving clerical officer in Cork, an achievement that reflects a lifetime of commitment, professionalism and care.

For almost five decades, Marion has been at the very heart of Millstreet Community School. Friendly, organised, efficient and unfailingly dedicated, she was often the first friendly face to welcome students, parents, staff and visitors to the school. Her calm manner, attention to detail and deep knowledge of school life made her an indispensable colleague and a hugely respected member of the MCS community. Marion’s contribution went far beyond her role; she helped shape the warm and welcoming spirit that defines our school.

To mark this significant milestone, a retirement lunch was held in the school library, attended by past and present colleagues along with members of the Board of Management. It was a fitting and heartfelt celebration of Marion’s remarkable career and the lasting impact she has had on generations of staff and students.

Marion was presented with a beautiful painting from her colleagues as a token of their gratitude and appreciation. In another special moment, former Art teacher Barry Fraiser presented Marion with a stunning piece of hand-made pottery, created especially for the occasion. The thoughtful and artistic gift was warmly received and added greatly to the sense of occasion.

Guests also enjoyed wonderful food kindly supplied by Kall & Dyne, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance.

One of the most touching moments of the afternoon came when Chris Horan read a beautiful poem he had written in tribute to Marion, perfectly capturing the affection, respect and admiration felt for her across the school community. This was followed by warm and sincere speeches from Principal Pól Ó Síodhcháin and colleague Jennifer O’Donoghue, who reflected on Marion’s professionalism, kindness and the enormous contribution she has made to school life over the years.

Marion will be hugely missed in Millstreet Community School, but her legacy will live on through the countless lives she has touched during her 46 years of service. We wish her every happiness, good health and enjoyment in this new chapter, and we thank her sincerely for everything she has given to our school community.
