Major Investment Secured for School Sports Hall
We are delighted to share very positive news regarding a major upgrade of the school Sports Hall, following the successful securing of significant capital funding.
After ongoing engagement with the Department of Education in relation to long-standing issues with the heating system, the school was initially approved for €75,000 to address urgent heating issues.
In addition to this, the Principal has now secured a further €300,000 in funding, allowing us to proceed not with temporary repairs, but with a complete replacement of the entire heating system in the Sports Hall.
What will the works involve?
The project will include:
Removal of the existing boiler, pipework, tanks and ventilation systems
Installation of a fully re-piped, modern heating system
15 radiant heaters installed at roof/ceiling level in the main hall
New radiators throughout the facility
A new heating system supplying hot water to taps and showers
New ventilation systems in the changing rooms
In addition, the school will invest approximately €90,000 in refurbishing the dressing rooms. This work is part-funded by a €70,000 Community Recognition Funding Grant from Cork County Council and will include:
New toilets, showers and sanitary ware
New benches
New flooring throughout the dressing rooms and corridor
Full repainting of all changing room and corridor areas
Timeline and impact on school activities
It is expected that works will begin within the next fortnight. While there will inevitably be some disruption during the project, arrangements will be put in place to ensure continuity for students, including alternative locations for PE where required.
The majority of works are expected to be completed before May, and we can confirm that the Sports Hall and dressing rooms will be fully available for the Transition Year Musical in May.
A significant upgrade for the school community
Altogether, this represents a very significant investment in the school, delivering a long-overdue upgrade to facilities that are used daily by students and the wider local community. We are delighted that a project we have been working towards for some time has now been brought to fruition.
Further updates will be shared as the works progress. We are also expecting an update shortly regarding potential funding for electrical works in the Sports Hall.
We thank parents and guardians for their continued support and look forward to delivering these important improvements for our students.
We also thank the Department of Education and Youth and Cork County Council for their continued support of, and investment in, Millstreet Community School.
