"Belonging"

Film-making is now a firm part of MCS and the latest offering- a fascinating documentary on the theme of "Belonging", is both an exuberant and thought-provoking look at life in our school.

Members of the T.Y. Global Citizenship Education (GCE) class (Méabh Buckley, Joshua Sibanda, David O'Brien, Emmanuel Akinbote and Eimear O'Leary) worked with film-maker Chris Hurley and prepared a series of short interviews on 'belonging'., as part of the school’s GCE program run with World Wise Global Schools. This explored students' thoughts and experiences on the school as a community, involving and supporting all students in the life of the school.

The responses reflected the busy, often hectic, daily life at the school. Classes and homework take a lot of our time, as well as all the extra-curricular activities and sports. The students described feeling part of this web of relationships and the energetic, ever-changing life of the school.

The students also raised the difficulties that all students feel at some point. They identified how we need to be to be aware as to how we can help new colleagues who join the school. Loneliness and difficulties getting integrated were named as challenges and the documentary raised the question of how we can improve on this. Students and teachers agreed that we must ensure all students take a full and active part in school life, developing their talents and sharing them with others.

The T.Y. GCE class facilitated a variety of activities throughout the year focusing on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.  The documentary is linked to SDG #10 - Reducing inequalities.
