MCS Week of Language and Culture

We've had an outstanding Language and Culture Week in MCS, packed with activities, all building awareness of the world around us, especially about the countries and cultures represented in our school at the same time as celebrating diversity and challenging racism.

The annual MCS School Olympics was won by representatives of Poland, with the team doing best over a range of activities including basketball, badminton, a relay race and a chess tournament. The whole school was busy with these over the week, and much more, with a number of workshops also running. Sports Against Racism Ireland (SARI) ran a workshop on football and discrimination, while a team from Narrative 4 explored how we can use stories to build empathy. Six TY students used resources from redcard.ie as the basis for a workshop called 'Show Racism The Red Card' which they have been running with 2nd years.

On Tuesday, the whole school took part in the 'World in our School' quiz, testing teams' knowledge on the countries in our school, on topics including history, geography, cuisine and famous people.

Students also created country profiles, posters with details and interesting facts on the MCS nations.

An art competition, entitled 'A Place to Feel Safe' got lots of people working on creative entries.

The 'Celebration of Culture and Inclusion' is a fantastic celebration of all the cultural life in the school, with music, song, dance and food, along with guest speakers, making for a memorable evening.

Ahead of this event Ms Walsh, our Home Economics teacher, working with four TY students and her 1st and 2nd year classes, produced delicious dishes from around the world to share at the evening event.

The week rounds up with the 'Wear Red Against Racism' day on Friday, as students wear red as a statement against racism in all its forms.

A brilliant week, and congratulations to all organizers and coordinator, Mr Magee, TY GCE members, staff and all students who took part.
